Bill Chiego, Director Emeritus of the McNay Art Museum, had a long career in art museums before coming to lead the McNay in 1991. Beginning as a curator at the Toledo Museum of Art, he then served as chief curator at the Portland Art Museum (Oregon} and the North Carolina Museum of Art, before becoming director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College. He holds a Ph.D. in art history from Case Western Reserve University in a joint program with the Cleveland Museum of Art. Over the years he has had the privilege of working with several Monuments and Fine Arts Officers.
He will tell the story of how the Monuments and Fine Arts Officers ("The Monuments Men" ) corps was formed during World War II and how their dramatic impact differed depending on the very different circumstances they worked under in Europe and Japan. Particular attention will be given to their less widely known work in Japan.
